Implants

A dental implant refers to a metal root that is placed down into the jaw. It allows the dentist to mount a replacement tooth or bridge onto them. These implants provide a stable support for the replacement tooth by fusing with the jaw bone.

Dental implants are the most preferred medium to replace a missing tooth. They have a very high success rate. They are comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Some other advantages of opting for a dental implant include good oral health, improved speech and comfort.

A dental implant is basically a titanium based cylinder that is fitted deep into the gum until it is placed in the bone. After a certain period of time (approximately two to six months) the implants fuse to the bone. This process is known as Osseointegration. Once this process occurs, the crown is ready to be installed.

Unlike what many people think, the procedure of installing dental implants is not painful. Anesthesia is used to numb the specific location while undergoing the procedure. There is minimal to no post-op pain. A dental implant significantly improves dental retention and crown stability. The presence of sufficient bone is needed to undergo this procedure. Other physical factors also need to be taken into consideration. An X-ray and CT-scan will be required to determine if enough bone is present for the implant to fuse with. It will also help decide the kind, size and shape of the implant needed.
